Потребность в авианосцах, по крайней мере, во время Первой и Второй мировых войнах заключалась в доставке самолётов в место боестолкновения с материка, а это было крайне затруднительно учитывая размах театра боевых действий и скорости самолётов прошлого века. Поэтому имело смысл иметь такие авианосцы, которые обеспечивали бы присутствие страны в международных водах, вдали от ее собственных границ.
